Mosaic Tile Floor Transitions

I love tile.

When our kitchen broke-down and we had to get new flooring because of a water leak, I knew I wanted wood-look tile.  I had our tile guy price out laying tile in our 12 x 12 dining room as well (the one with the paper floor), but it was going to be an extra $700 for labor and almost $800 for the wood-look tile.  So I passed on the "deal" he was giving me.

Imagine my surprise when (a few months later) I find the wood tile is on sale at my local Lowes! The tile is normally $9.97 per tile and one tile covers 2.3 square feet, but Lowes had it for $3.49 per PIECE!

This wasn't just a sale y'all, this was clearance!

Was it a mistake??  Did they mess up?

I didn't wait around to ask any questions.  I bought EVERYTHING they had, which was just enough for my dining room.

It cost me less than $200!

Tip:  I purchased the tile online through Ebates and set it up for an in-store pickup.  By doing this, Ebates gave me an additional 6% back!  If you haven't used Ebates, I highly recommend it if you do a lot of online shopping.

My tile guy was not on my good list because he stopped the tile right at the door opening for my dining room.  So I debated on putting a piece of tile across the transition, but decided I wanted to make it a little more "me"... Especially when I saw this great mosaic tile at Home Depot.

I simply measured and cut the tile into strips that matched with the transition area in my floor.

The result??

I love it!

The grout in the picture shows up gray, but it's actually black and doesn't look light in person.

Have you ever had a difficult floor transition to work with?  What did you do?

  2. This is pretty...but not practical. PLEASE DO NOT install a wall tile in a floor and expect it to last! This may work short term...but the glass tile will break! It is not if...it is when.

    1. I disagree. I did a ton of research before committing to installing the mosaic tile transition. Fear of the glass breaking is something people use to worry about, but not so much any more. The biggest concern is it being much more slippery than regular tile. With this being a transition only and in an area that we are not in that much it has been a perfect application for our use. I will certainly keep everyone updated, but so far, so good. As long as your floor is even, clean and a sturdy cement board is laid, there should be no problem. Would I lay a whole floor of this? Absolutely not, but for the transitions.. it works.
