Remove Gold Etching From Glass

Remember when I told you about my $5 China Cabinet and the photo that I posted of the doors with the gold "faux" etching?  Removing this baked on decoration almost got the best of me.  I tried scraping it off with a razor blade and all it did was scratch off little lines.  My son even said "Hey Mom, do you think that will take you one week or two to get that piece of glass done?"  I didn't answer him, because I thought for sure it would be longer than that.  I tried looking up tutorials, helpful hints, everything I could find... but everyone just said to buy new glass to put in the doors.

Then I remembered my brand spankin' new bottle of  Herbal Authority Tea Tree Oil .  I have been a big believer in this stuff for years.  We use it on scrapes, cuts, insect bites, I've used it to remove stain from my hands, rust from the pulls for the china cabinet, I put a few drops in the bath for the dogs and it repels fleas/kills and ticks.  Keeper of the Home has 25 Uses for Tea Tree Oil that you can take a look at here.  It's AWESOME!


So I mixed about 15 drops with some hot water, let it sit for about 5 minutes.

I then removed the blade from my utility knife and held it at a 45 degree angle against the gold line.

And look how smoothly it came off!

Within 10 minutes I had all of the gold removed from one of the pieces of glass.  Shattering my son's estimate of 1 to 2 weeks!  I was left with this pile of gold goop.

I now have nice clean glass to put back in the doors of my china cabinet! Hooray for not having to buy new!

Just to show you how great this stuff is, I used it on this chair that hubby got from his storage wars expeditions.  It sat for about 5 minutes then I was able to scrape the paint right off without damaging the wood!
